Earth Day at TEP Birmingham: people powering progress

Share

Earth Day, celebrated each year on 22nd April, brings people together across the world to recognise the importance of protecting our environment.

It’s a moment to reflect on the progress being made, the challenges that remain, and the role each of us can play in creating a cleaner, more sustainable future.

At TEP Birmingham, sustainability is part of everyday life on site, shaped by collaboration and shared responsibility. It extends far beyond one day in the calendar.

In this blog, we reflect on how its message is diffused across every aspect of our work.

A community working towards a shared goal

One of the strengths of TEP Birmingham is its growing community of more than 20 organisations, all working towards a greener, cleaner future.

From clean energy innovators and circular economy specialists, to advanced manufacturing and recycling businesses, each organisation plays a role in driving sustainable change.

Being based together creates opportunities to share ideas, resources and knowledge. It also encourages collaboration across sectors, helping businesses test new technologies and share knowledge. This sense of shared purpose helps turn individual efforts into collective progress, strengthening the wider clean growth ecosystem that continues to grow onsite.

Working with the local community

Sustainability at TEP Birmingham extends beyond the site itself. Through regular community days, we work closely with local residents to build connections and contribute positively to the lives of those that live in the surrounding area to our site.

One example is the repair café, a core part of our community days. Members of the TEP Birmingham ecosystem share their technical skills to help residents repair household items that might otherwise be thrown away. These events not only reduce waste but also encourage learning and promote the principles of a circular economy.

We also take pride in caring for the surrounding area. Attendees to our community days regularly take part in litter picking sessions, including along the nearby Grand Union Canal. These activities help improve the local environment while strengthening relationships between onsite organisations and the communities around us.

Sustainability in the days and weeks that follow Earth Day

Earth Day is a reminder that meaningful change happens when people work together with a shared purpose.

As the site continues to grow, so too does our commitment to sustainability. By working together and supporting innovation, the community at TEP Birmingham is helping build a cleaner, greener future for Birmingham and beyond.
