Turning Ambition into Action: Tyseley’s Role in the West Midland’s Growth Story

Share

The West Midlands has no shortage of ambition. That was one of the main takeaways from the West Midlands Growth Summit, attended by Robert Horsfall, Director of Finance & Strategic Projects at TEP Birmingham.

From advanced manufacturing to clean energy innovation, there was a strong sense of confidence in what the West Midlands can achieve. It was also a reminder of the region’s unique strengths, from its rich industrial heritage to its established ecosystem of businesses and innovators capable of driving long-term economic growth.

The opportunity for growth now lies in creating places that can translate these ambitions into real outcomes and TEP Birmingham is well positioned to do just that.

Opportunity for reindustrialisation

The West Midlands has long been defined by its ability to innovate, manufacture and adapt. The summit repeatedly highlighted the importance of building on the region’s existing strengths, rather than trying to reinvent them.

That approach sits at the heart of the vision for TEP Birmingham.

For more than 300 years, Webster & Horsfall has been part of Birmingham’s industrial story. Today, that heritage is being combined with pioneering work in clean energy and innovation through the activity already established in Tyseley.

Rather than viewing the area’s industrial past as something to look back on, the ambition is to use it as a platform for future growth.

The result is a vision that brings together industry and investment in a way that can help regeneration across East Birmingham while supporting the industries that will shape the region’s future.

This visualisation created by Howells encompasses the potential for reindustrialisation across the region, bringing this ambition to life.

Moving ambition to delivery

One of the key themes emerging from the summit was the need to create the right conditions for investment. Investors are increasingly looking for places that don’t just talk about innovation but can demonstrate it with a strong, strategic vision.

Through the development of Tyseley Green Innovation District, TEP Birmingham is working to create a destination that brings together industrial innovation, skills development and commercial investment.

Supported by strong partnerships and aligned with the wider ambitions for East Birmingham, including the emerging East Birmingham Mayoral Development Zone, TEP Birmingham is well placed to help turn ambition into delivery.

It’s ultimately about more than individual projects. It’s about creating an ecosystem that gives businesses the confidence to invest and grow.

Working alongside Birmingham City Council, the West Midlands Combined Authority, the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Canal & River Trust, Howells and other partners, TEP Birmingham is helping to establish a long-term vision for the area.

The West Midlands already has the capability to lead. The challenge now is scaling that success and converting potential into long-term prosperity.

A model for growth

Commenting on the event, Robert said:

“One of the strongest messages from the summit was that the West Midlands already has many of the ingredients needed to succeed. Our rich, industrial heritage in the West Midlands is second to none, with world-class engineering expertise and growing partnerships in the area.

“At TEP Birmingham, we’re not starting from scratch. We already have exciting clean energy and innovation activities taking place in Tyseley, alongside generations of industrial activity. Especially through the Tyseley Green Innovation District, we’re looking at how we can build on this momentum and create opportunities that benefit both local businesses and the wider region.”

TEP Birmingham should not be seen as a standalone development, but as a critical component of Birmingham’s wider economic transformation.  By bringing together industry partners and investors, the area has the potential to act as a catalyst for growth across East Birmingham and beyond.

The foundations are already in place

The West Midlands Growth Summit reinforced what many across the region already know: the West Midlands has the expertise and determination needed to lead the industries of the future.

Many of the building blocks are already in place at TEP Birmingham. The development of the Tyseley Green Innovation District has created an opportunity to bring together industry, investors and local communities around a shared vision for growth.

As the West Midlands looks ahead, areas like Tyseley can demonstrate what reindustrialisation looks like in practice, not as a concept or strategy, but as something tangible that creates investment and supports the region’s next chapter of growth.
