Member spotlight: How National Gas Metering is revolutionising the future of commercial catering

Share

National Gas Metering (NGM) manages over 5 million natural gas metering assets across the UK, focusing on precision, reliability, and safety in gas metering services.

As the demand for sustainable energy sources continues to grow, it has developed hydrogen solutions by ngm: offering metering and infrastructure services to support businesses and industry in making the switch from natural gas, a fossil fuel energy source, to hydrogen.

In 2023, National Gas Metering signed a lease with TEP Birmingham, one which included provision for onsite office space and an industrial space to develop a hydrogen demonstrator and test facility at our site.

In our latest member spotlight blog, we discuss the work of ‘hydrogen solutions by ngm’, its hydrogen services line, and delve into the brilliance of its pioneering hydrogen kitchen, the first of its kind in the world.

Meet hydrogen solutions by ngm

Published in 2021, the UK Hydrogen Strategy sets out the government’s plan to develop a thriving low-carbon hydrogen economy to support the transition to Net Zero. It aims to scale up production to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, positioning hydrogen as a key energy source for decarbonising industry, transport, and heat.

As a leader in gas transportation and measurement, National Gas Metering is perfectly positioned to support the transition from natural gas to hydrogen. In 2024, NGM launched a line of hydrogen services called ‘hydrogen solutions by ngm’.

These services offer a variety of assurances, built on the foundation of NGM’s experience:

  • Safety by design: Engineered using advanced technology to meet the highest safety standards from the first design iteration
  • Nationwide service: Delivered through a reliable UK-wide network, backed by extensive expertise.
  • Turnkey solutions: End-to-end support, from design through to installation and throughout the entire asset lifecycle ensuring seamless delivery and lifetime operation.
  • Product assurance: Accredited hydrogen infrastructure and metering solutions that meet rigorous industry standards.

Heating things up

In 2024, after six months of collaboration alongside Falcon Foodservice Equipment, the world’s first hydrogen kitchen opened at TEP Birmingham.

Designed from scratch, the NGM team worked alongside Falcon to develop a hydrogen service, including its supply system, connection, metering, and environment, into a commercial kitchen – similar to ones you would find in a hotel or restaurant but powered by low-carbon hydrogen.

Other partners involved in the project included WV Howe, Metersit, Pietro Fiorentini and Enertek Consultants.

The hydrogen kitchen offers many benefits for businesses – including our members and beyond – who are interested in transitioning away from natural gas, including reducing CO2 emissions, and assuring safe operation without compromising food quality.

A meal to share

In December last year, we hosted a festive lunch for our members.

During this event, we shared some delicious food cooked in NGM’s hydrogen kitchen by The Active Wellbeing Society, a local community organisation which exists to tackle inequalities and promote community wellbeing.

But its collaborative impact doesn’t stop there, the hydrogen kitchen exists as a real-life demonstrator of how this technology can work.

NGM hosts regular tours here for students, industry peers, and policymakers; all of whom are interested in how hydrogen will power the transition away from natural gas.

David Horsfall, Director of Property and Sustainability, commented: “We have been delighted to welcome National Gas Metering to TEP Birmingham. Their hydrogen kitchen brings people together and reflects the collaborative spirit that defines our site.

“Their team of innovators have delivered a first-of-a-kind hydrogen kitchen, building on the growing cluster of hydrogen activity already underway here. We believe their work will make a positive contribution to businesses and communities across Birmingham, while supporting the reduction of CO2 emissions.”
